How to Become a Licensed Electrician in Texas

It takes years of training, rigorous exams, and ongoing education.

    01

    Complete an Apprenticeship

In Texas, aspiring electricians must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a licensed master electrician — roughly 4 years of hands-on, real-world experience.

    02

    Pass the Journeyman Exam

After the apprenticeship, candidates must pass the TDLR Journeyman Electrician exam covering the National Electrical Code, Texas laws, and safety standards.

    03

    Earn the Master Electrician License

A Journeyman must log an additional 2 years (4,000 hours) of supervised work before sitting for the Master Electrician exam — the highest credential issued by the State of Texas.

    04

    Maintain Continuing Education

Texas requires licensed electricians to complete continuing education hours every renewal cycle to stay current with NEC updates, new safety protocols, and evolving building codes.
