How Much Does a Whole-Home Generator Cost in Texas? (2026 Installed Prices)

After 2021's ice storm and the past three summers of ERCOT grid warnings, whole-home generators went from luxury to standard equipment in North Texas. Here's what one actually costs installed in 2026 — no bait-and-switch pricing.

Installed Price by Generator Size (DFW, 2026)

    | Generator Size | Covers | Installed Price |

    |---|---|---|

    | 14 kW | Most 1,500–2,200 sq ft homes (essentials + 1 AC) | $8,900 – $11,500 |

    | 18 kW | 2,000–2,800 sq ft, 2 AC units | $10,900 – $13,500 |

    | 22 kW | 2,500–3,500 sq ft, whole home | $12,500 – $15,900 |

    | 26 kW | 3,500–5,000 sq ft, whole home + pool | $15,500 – $19,500 |

Prices include the generator, a 200A automatic transfer switch, concrete or composite pad, gas line tie-in up to 25 ft, permit, and City of Burleson / Fort Worth inspection.

    What Drives the Price Up

  1. Gas line runs over 25 ft — typical add of $400–$1,200
  2. Propane vs natural gas — propane conversion is included, but a new tank runs $1,500–$3,500 extra
  3. Panel upgrade required — old 100A or FPE panels must be replaced first ($2,400–$3,400)
  4. Long conduit runs from generator to house (over 30 ft) — $8–$14 per foot
  5. Load management module for homes with 2+ AC units on smaller generators — $350–$650
  6. Sizing Rule of Thumb for Texas Homes

Texas summers mean sizing around AC load, not square footage alone:

  7. One 3-ton AC → 14 kW minimum
  8. Two 3-ton ACs → 18–22 kW
  9. Two 4–5 ton ACs or a pool → 22–26 kW
  10. We do a free load calc before quoting — undersizing is the #1 mistake DIY-quote homeowners make.

    Generac vs Kohler vs Briggs

  11. Generac — Best parts availability in DFW, 10-year warranty, quietest air-cooled units (59–67 dB)
  12. Kohler — Slightly better long-term reliability, longer service intervals, 5-year standard warranty
  13. Briggs & Stratton — Cheapest upfront but scarce local service network — we don't recommend for Texas installs
  14. Permit & Inspection in DFW Cities

Every DFW city requires a permit. Typical timeline from contract to running generator:

    1. Load calc + gas sizing — same day

    2. Permit pull (Burleson, Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield) — 3–7 business days

    3. Install day — 6–10 hours, power off for 30–45 min for transfer switch

    4. City inspection — 1–5 days after install

    5. Generac / Kohler factory startup + first exercise cycle — same day as inspection

    Financing

Most of our generator customers use 0% for 18 months through Synchrony or Wells Fargo. Monthly payment on a $13,000 22kW install ≈ $722/mo interest-free.
