When to Upgrade From a 100-Amp to 200-Amp Panel (Texas Homeowner's Guide)

About 40% of the DFW homes we service still have 100-amp panels — most from the 1970s and 80s. Not every one needs an upgrade. Here's the honest breakdown.

6 Signs You Actually Need 200 Amps

  1. You're adding an EV charger over 32A — a 48A hardwired charger alone eats half a 100A service
  2. You're adding a second AC unit or heat pump — a 4-ton heat pump can pull 45–60 amps under startup
  3. Whole-home generator over 14 kW — the ATS needs headroom
  4. 4. Frequent main-breaker trips in summer when AC + dryer + oven run together

  5. Panel is FPE, Zinsco, or Pushmatic — upgrade for safety regardless of amperage (see our [Federal Pacific panel guide](/blog/federal-pacific-panel-replacement-burleson-tx))
  6. You're planning a kitchen remodel, addition, or pool — code will require more dedicated circuits than a 100A panel can supply
  7. When You DON'T Need to Upgrade

  8. Single AC, gas dryer/oven/water heater, no EV — 100A is usually plenty
  9. You just want "more breaker slots" — a sub-panel off the existing 100A service is often $800–$1,400, versus $2,400–$3,400 for a full upgrade
  10. Adding one NEMA 14-50 for occasional EV charging + load management device — $200–$400 vs full upgrade
  11. Cost of Upgrading in DFW (2026)

    | Scope | Installed Price |

    |---|---|

    | 100A → 200A, existing meter base OK | $2,400 – $2,900 |

    | 100A → 200A + new meter base/mast | $2,900 – $3,400 |

    | 100A → 200A + Oncor service drop upgrade | $3,400 – $4,200 |

    | Add: sub-panel for detached garage/shop | $1,200 – $2,400 |

Includes permit, city inspection, Oncor disconnect/reconnect, and modern Square D, Eaton, or Siemens panel with AFCI/GFCI breakers per current code.

What Actually Happens on Upgrade Day

    1. Oncor disconnects power around 8 AM

    2. Old panel and (if needed) meter base removed

    3. New 200A panel and copper grounding installed — 4 to 6 hours

    4. City inspector arrives mid-afternoon

    5. Oncor reconnects — usually by 5–6 PM

    6. We test every circuit and walk you through the new panel

Most homes are without power for 6–9 hours on install day. We schedule around your work-from-home needs when possible.

    The Load-Management Shortcut

For homeowners who only need to add an EV charger, a device like the Wallbox Pulsar Plus or Emporia EV Charger with load balancing costs $200–$400 more than a plain charger but avoids the $2,400+ panel upgrade. It monitors total home draw and throttles the EV charger when the house is under heavy load. Works on 90%+ of 100A DFW homes.
