Hot Tub Electrical Installation Cost & Requirements in DFW

A new hot tub needs its own dedicated circuit, GFCI protection, and a disconnect within sight — regardless of whether it's a plug-and-play or hard-wired model. Here's exactly what DFW code requires and what it costs.

The Two Types of Hot Tubs

    120V Plug-and-Play (15 amp)

Plugs into a standard outlet. Slower heat recovery, no jets while heating. Still needs a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit if the manufacturer specifies one (most do).

    240V Hard-Wired (40–60 amp) — Most Common

Full-power spa. Requires a dedicated 240V circuit, GFCI spa panel disconnect within sight (5–50 ft) of the tub, and typically 6 AWG copper or 4 AWG aluminum wire.

    2026 DFW Installation Pricing

    | Scope | Price |

    |---|---|

    | 240V, panel <30 ft from tub, easy run | $1,150 – $1,650 |

    | 240V, 30–75 ft run, some conduit | $1,650 – $2,450 |

    | 240V, long run + trenching | $2,450 – $3,850 |

    | Panel upgrade if 100-amp is maxed | +$2,400 – $3,400 |

    | 120V plug-and-play new dedicated circuit | $385 – $585 |

Includes: permit, spa disconnect (Siemens/Eaton GFCI), copper wire, weatherproof conduit, bonding grid tie-in, city inspection.

What DFW Code Requires (NEC 680)

  1. Dedicated circuit — no other devices on it
  2. 2. GFCI protection at the disconnect (not a breaker GFCI alone)

    3. Disconnect within sight and 5–50 ft of the tub — NOT closer than 5 ft

  3. Equipotential bonding grid — a #8 solid copper wire bonding all metal within 5 ft of the water
  4. 5. Buried conduit at 18" minimum (or 6" with PVC + concrete cap)

  5. Permit + city inspection — required in every DFW municipality
  6. Spa GFCI disconnect box mounted per NEC 680

    Common Mistakes That Fail Inspection

  7. Disconnect too close (must be 5+ ft from water)
  8. Missing bonding grid — the #1 fail we see
  9. Reusing an existing dryer or range circuit — never allowed
  10. Aluminum wire without antioxidant paste and torque-marked lugs
  11. No weatherproof-in-use cover on any 120V outlet within 20 ft
  12. Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

If you have a 100-amp panel and central HVAC, adding a 50-amp hot tub circuit will often push you over. We'll run a load calc for free during the quote. If you need it, see our [100 → 200 amp upgrade guide](/blog/when-to-upgrade-100-amp-to-200-amp-panel).

    Timeline

Most DFW hot tub installs are 1 day of work + inspection. Permit typically issues in 2–4 business days.
