GFCI Outlet Not Working? Full Troubleshooting Guide (Before You Call)

If a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or outdoor outlet suddenly goes dead, a tripped GFCI is the culprit in about 80% of cases. Here's the fix path, in order.

Step 1: Find the GFCI That Controls It

Every GFCI protects itself AND every "downstream" standard outlet on the same circuit. So the dead bedroom outlet might actually be controlled by the GFCI in the bathroom or garage.

Check every GFCI in these locations:

  1. All bathrooms
  2. Garage (especially near the door to the house)
  3. Kitchen counter outlets
  4. Outdoor outlets (weather-covered)
  5. Basement / utility room
  6. Push the RESET button firmly. If it clicks and stays in, you're done.

Step 2: If It Won't Reset

Unplug everything on the circuit — every lamp, charger, appliance. Try reset again. If it holds, one of those devices has a ground fault. Plug them back one at a time until it trips.

Step 3: If It Still Won't Reset With Nothing Plugged In

Check the breaker panel. A tripped breaker will be in the middle position — push it firmly OFF, then ON.

Step 4: Test the GFCI Itself

Press TEST — the RESET button should pop out and the outlet goes dead. Press RESET — should click and hold. If either step fails, the GFCI is bad and needs replacing. GFCIs typically last 10–15 years; older ones in humid Texas garages die sooner.

When It's Actually a Wiring Problem

  7. GFCI trips again within seconds of resetting
  8. Trips only during rain (water intrusion at outdoor box)
  9. Trips when a specific appliance runs — that appliance has a fault
  10. Warm or discolored faceplate — stop and call, this can be an arcing hot-neutral
  11. GFCI Replacement Cost in DFW

    | Scope | 2026 Price |

    |---|---|

    | Replace single GFCI | $145 – $185 |

    | Replace + upgrade to weather-resistant WR-TR | $175 – $225 |

    | Add new GFCI-protected circuit | $285 – $485 |

    | Trace & repair downstream wiring fault | $250 – $550 |

    Texas Code Note

Since the 2020 NEC (adopted across DFW), GFCI protection is required on: all bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor, laundry, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, and within 6 ft of any sink. If your 1990s Burleson home is missing them in the laundry room, that's a fixable code gap — usually $145 per location.
