Flickering Lights: 7 Causes and When It's an Emergency

Flickering lights are the #1 "should I call an electrician?" question we get in DFW. The honest answer: it depends on the pattern. Here's how to read yours.

    When Flickering Is Normal (Usually)

  1. One bulb flickers, others don't — Loose bulb or dying bulb. Tighten or replace. If it keeps happening in the same fixture, the socket contact is worn.
  2. LED flickers on a dimmer — Non-dimmable LED, or a legacy dimmer not rated for LEDs. Swap to an LED-compatible dimmer (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart).
  3. Flicker when the AC or fridge kicks on — Momentary voltage drop from motor inrush. Normal on 100-amp panels running heavy loads; a sign you may need a 200-amp upgrade.
  4. When Flickering Is a Real Problem — Call Now

    1. Lights dim across the whole house randomly — Could be a loose neutral at the main panel or meter base. This is a fire and appliance-destroyer hazard. Stop using major appliances and call an electrician same-day.

    2. Half the house is dim, other half is bright — Classic sign of a lost neutral from the utility (Oncor). Call the electrician first to confirm; they'll coordinate with Oncor.

    3. Flickering with a burning smell or warm switch plate — Turn off the breaker to that circuit and call (817) 447-7141 immediately. See our [burning smell guide](/blog/burning-smell-electrical-outlet-what-to-do).

    4. Flickering only in one room + breaker feels warm — Loose connection in a junction box or backstab outlet. Common in DFW homes built 1985–2005.

What a Real Diagnostic Costs in DFW

A proper flicker diagnostic uses a voltage recorder over 24–72 hours plus a torque check on every panel lug. In DFW that runs $185–$285 flat, and we credit it toward any repair over $500.

What We Actually Check (In Order)

    1. Bulb + fixture (5 minutes)

    2. Dimmer compatibility if applicable

    3. Torque all panel connections to spec

    4. Voltage at meter base under load

    5. Check for aluminum branch wiring or backstabs

    6. Voltage recorder if intermittent

    Don't Ignore Recurring Flicker

Loose neutrals arc silently inside walls. We've pulled charred junction boxes out of Burleson homes where the owner ignored flickering for two years. Get it looked at.
