Installing an EV Charger at Home: What to Expect in 2026

EV ownership in Texas is surging, and charging at home is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your vehicle ready. But a Level 2 charger isn't a plug-and-play appliance — it requires dedicated electrical work.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 Charging

Level 1 uses your standard 120V outlet. It adds about 3–5 miles of range per hour — fine for plug-in hybrids, painfully slow for full EVs.

Level 2 uses a 240V dedicated circuit (like your dryer outlet). It adds 25–40 miles of range per hour, meaning a full charge overnight.

Electrical Requirements for Level 2

Dedicated 240V circuit — 40 or 50 amps depending on the charger

Proper wire gauge — Typically 6-gauge copper for a 48-amp charger

GFCI protection — Required by NEC code for EV charging circuits

Panel capacity — Your panel must have available amperage. Many homes with 100-amp panels need an upgrade first.

Cost Breakdown

A typical Level 2 home charger installation in DFW runs $800 to $2,500, which includes the circuit, wiring, and labor (charger unit not included). Homes requiring a panel upgrade will have additional costs.

Federal Tax Credits

The federal EV charger tax credit (30C) covers 30% of installation costs up to $1,000 for residential installations through 2032. Keep your invoice — you'll need it at tax time.

Outdoor vs. Garage Installation

Both work. Outdoor installations require a weatherproof-rated charger and conduit protection for the wiring. Garage installations are typically simpler and less expensive.
