Breaker Keeps Tripping? 5 Causes and What It Actually Costs to Fix

Breakers are doing their job when they trip — they cut power before wiring overheats. But when the same breaker trips over and over, it's telling you one of five things.

    The 5 Real Causes

    1. Overloaded Circuit (Most Common)

Too many high-draw devices on the same circuit — space heater + microwave + coffee maker on the same 15-amp kitchen circuit is a classic. Fix: redistribute loads, or add a dedicated circuit ($285–$485 in DFW).

    2. Short Circuit

Hot wire touching neutral or ground — often in an appliance cord, a damaged wire behind a wall, or a nail through Romex from a picture-hanging incident. The breaker trips instantly, not after a few minutes.

    3. Ground Fault

Hot wire touching a grounded surface (metal box, plumbing, wet area). Common in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages. If a GFCI outlet is on the circuit, it'll pop first.

    4. Arc Fault (AFCI Breakers)

Modern AFCI breakers detect dangerous arcing — loose wire nuts, damaged Romex staples, backstabbed outlets. They trip on conditions the old breakers ignored. Not a defect; it's finding real problems.

    5. Failing Breaker

Breakers wear out — 20–30 years is typical. Federal Pacific and Zinsco breakers are notorious for either not tripping when they should or tripping constantly. See our [FPE panel guide](/blog/federal-pacific-panel-replacement-burleson-tx).

What You Can Safely Try First

    1. Unplug everything on that circuit

    2. Reset the breaker (firmly OFF, then ON)

    3. Plug devices back in one at a time

    4. If it trips with nothing plugged in — stop. That's a wiring problem, not a load problem.

When to Stop DIY and Call

  1. Breaker won't reset at all (usually a dead breaker)
  2. Breaker feels hot or smells burnt
  3. Sparks or clicking sound from the panel
  4. Tripping in multiple rooms simultaneously
