Aluminum Wiring in DFW Homes: Real Risks & Remediation Cost

If your DFW home was built between 1965 and 1975, there's a real chance you have aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Insurance carriers know it, and they've been dropping policies aggressively in 2025–2026.

Why Aluminum Wiring Is a Real Hazard

Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper under load. Over decades, that motion loosens connections at every outlet, switch, and splice. Loose connections arc. Arcs start fires. The CPSC has documented aluminum-wired homes being 55x more likely to have a fire-hazard connection than copper-wired homes.

How to Tell If You Have It

  1. Home built 1965–1975 (peak period)
  2. Silver-colored wires visible when you unscrew an outlet cover
  3. "AL" or "ALUMINUM" printed on the cable jacket in the attic
  4. Insurance renewal specifically asks about it
  5. You Have 3 Real Options

    Option 1: COPALUM Crimping (Best)

CPSC-approved permanent repair. Copper pigtails crimped to aluminum with a special tool at every connection. Only about 300 certified installers in the US and none currently in DFW as of 2026. So realistically:

Option 2: AlumiConn Connectors (Standard DFW Fix)

UL-listed purple lever connectors that safely bond aluminum to copper pigtails at every device. Most insurance carriers accept this as full remediation when done throughout the home and inspected.

Cost in DFW: $85–$135 per device connection. Average 1,800 sq ft home has 60–90 devices = $5,500–$11,000 total, permitted and inspected.

    Option 3: Full Rewire

Overkill for most homes. Only makes sense if you're already opening walls for renovation. See our [rewire cost guide](/blog/cost-to-rewire-house-texas-2026).

    What Insurance Carriers Actually Want

We call the carrier during the quote — every one is different:

  6. State Farm, Allstate: AlumiConn or COPALUM, permitted, with a licensed-electrician letter
  7. USAA: AlumiConn accepted; requires post-work inspection photo
  8. Farmers, Liberty Mutual: Have been non-renewing aluminum homes even after remediation — call us before you accept a non-renewal
  9. Warning Signs You Have Loose Connections Now

  10. Warm outlet or switch plates
  11. Flickering when a big appliance runs — see our [flickering lights guide](/blog/flickering-lights-causes-when-to-call-electrician)
  12. Faint burning smell near an outlet
  13. Outlets that stop working randomly
  14. Any of those = call today. (817) 447-7141 or [request a quote](/get-a-quote). We provide the insurance-carrier letter with every aluminum remediation.
